“Art in Bayreuth from the 1940s to the 1960s from private collections and foundations.”

The exhibition presents works from municipal collections, most of which have not yet been shown to the public. In 1951, the first year of the Bayreuth Festival after the war, four artists organized an exhibition of contemporary art that was available for sale during the festival season. The initiators called themselves the “Freie Gruppe” (Free Group). This loose association without any formal rules remained in existence for the next few decades. The exhibition was held in school buildings and, from 1970, in the New Palace of the Hermitage. Public institutions also acquired paintings, which is why the art museum now holds a treasure trove of municipal property that it will present in 2025.
